Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) continues to receive huge updates eight months after its official launch. The most significant feature making waves from the On The Other Hand patch is the reintroduction of “lefty” mode, which allows left-handed players to swap their weapons to their left hand in-game.
CS2 predecessors like Source and Global Offensive (CS: GO) offered this function to players, so the community engaged in a lot of discourse when CS2 launched without this option. The much-anticipated feature comes with many other updates and requested changes in the latest major patch released on April 26, 2024.
The evolution of CS2
CS2 has undergone a lot of changes since its beta release. Its introduction into the Steam marketplace marked a massive leap for Valve, bringing in the new Source 2 engine to upgrade the game significantly. Using this advanced engine, CS2 was able to roll out better graphical performance, more immersive physics, new maps, and revamped dynamic lightning and environment reactivity.
One of the first significant changes impacted smoke grenades. They not only looked more realistic, but they also slowly filled space and would react to gunfire and explosions. This inevitably impacted the tactics used by both offense and defense. As the game upgrades its core mechanics, the weapons meta shifts, and players start playing differently.
Professional esports players have led the charge in exploring new gameplay styles, especially with the new sub-tick system that also impacted gunplay. This Counter-Strike 2 Betting Guide breaks down how the pro scene has evolved along with the game. Tournaments have officially scrapped the obsolete CS: GO in favor of CS2, with top events like the ESL Pro League seasons and PGL events leading the charge. New top players are expected to emerge as the new meta evolves, with minor shifts already seen in recent tournaments.
During the Copenhagen Majors, Natus Vincere (NAVI) took the first-ever major competitive win in CS2. Although this team has always performed well in Counter-Strike, it’s a marked change from the fact that CS: GO was previously dominated by Astralis by quite a long shot. The return of Overwatch
Valve has genuinely been listening to feedback over the months, and the ‘cl_righthand 0’ command, along with the lefty mode, aren’t the only features making a return. Overwatch made a comeback after being removed during an older beta update.
The useful feature allows vetted and ranked players to evaluate cases of potential cheating, griefing, and other disruptive behavior deemed offensive to the community. Using this system, toxic players get banned from lobbies efficiently. The new update also builds on this with an improved Valve Anti-Cheat (VAC) mechanism, which will cancel matches after a cheater has been detected and banned. Data from Counter-Strike Stats shows that this move has been effective since the end of April when some of the highest recorded VAC bans in a single day have been recorded since 2019.
Since the wave ban, bots and players using exploits have been kicked swiftly. Around 200,000 users have since gone inactive. Considering how badly riddled CS2 has been with cheaters since launch, the VAC is arguably one of the best updates to come to the game.
Map changes
The update also changed the map pool available to players. Dust has returned to the fold of Active Duty maps, while Overpass is out of rotation for now. Multiple maps have also been altered significantly. For instance, the popular Inferno got some spring cleaning with plenty of environmental clutter minimized, streets and decorative elements simplified, and some arches removed.
As a bonus for the Steam community, workshop maps can now be queued with other players in the same party. Parties can also take on practice matches. Finally, an alternate zoom for the radar map has also been added as a setting for those struggling with the base version.
Improvements to HUD and gameplay
Several quality-of-life improvements have also been introduced to the game, so it makes sense why the update is a hefty 8.5 gigabytes. Lighting adjustments have been made to make inspecting easier on the eyes, and users playing in Windowed mode can now adjust the game’s brightness. On top of this, the camera can now move during playback, even if playback is paused.
As for HUD changes, players can access the scoreboard by going to the Esc menu. Free cam spectators can now use radar icons, and a line-up reticle shows up after pulling the pin on a grenade. When the reticle appears, it can be tweaked accordingly. These changes make playing the game less of a headache and better to look at, which helps users maximize their experience with the right tools.
Beetronics’ guide to monitor sizes for gaming notes that color accuracy, gamut, and field of vision are critical to the gaming experience. With good refresh rates and HD resolution, games should run smoothly. In CS2, Valve’s efforts in increasing visual fidelity maximize the tech that newer monitors offer. While casual players will appreciate this aesthetically, even veteran players should notice how it impacts immersion and the overall experience.
